Sheila Haventon is the director of the east coast chapter of an agency in Concord, New Hampshire known as the Catholic Society of Modern-Day Disciples. She is a deeply religious woman, having sworn herself to serving the Lord early on in her life. For nearly a decade she has served the CSMDD as an overseer to several agents trained to seek out, and analyze various unexplainable phenomena in an attempt to prove that they are clues placed by God that pinpoint the circumstances of Christ’s eventual return. Under the leadership of a secret chapter of the Vatican in Rome, the CSMDD has investigated hundreds of anomalies all over the world during its decade in existence. Their crusade has been unfruitful for the most part . . . that is until now.
One hour East of Concord in Cape Neddick, Maine, one of Haventon’s best agents, D’Anna Johanson, has discovered something that goes above and beyond anything that the CSMDD has ever dealt with. At a small nursery school in Cape Neddick’s neighboring town of Ogunquit, a teacher has observed that eleven young boys in her class have been having the same dream each night. These nightly visions involve a figure resembling Christ standing in the center of an evergreen forest while a ring of fire expands around him toward the dwellings at its edge. When certain circumstances lead Haventon to the small, seaside town, she quickly discovers that the dreams are simply the first wave of a much more disturbing scenario that leaves her wondering, with every new development, if it is God, or Satan… or something else that is causing it.
What follows for Haventon is a two-year trial that tests the strength of her faith as she finds herself lured into the middle of a conflict between the Baptist and Catholic influences of Cape Neddick regarding the true meaning of the phenomenon unfolding there. She is confronted by undeniable truths as to the nature of the happenings, which begin to relate to the mysterious history in Cape Neddick, and an evil that was planted within the soil of its woods in the early years of its settlement. As the details of the outlandish incidents unfold, Haventon finds herself confronted by harrowing circumstances that mirror unclosed chapters in her own past, leaving her to struggle against becoming one of the many instruments that make up the enigmatic force at the center of it all: The Dominance Flush.
